CIVIL WAR FOOT OFFICER'S SWORD & 2 Piece EAGLE PLATE SWORD BELT SET

Original non-regulation Foot Officer sword and sword belt with hangers and gilt eagle two piece buckle. Sword guard and pommel are engraved and chased brass with an etched quill back blade stamped at the ricasso with the knight logo and name of the Solingen, German maker Clauberg. Sword length overall is approximately 41″…Blade is 34″ long and 1″ wide at the ricasso.

Belt and sheath leather are in exceptional condition and still bright and supple. Drag and throat will slide off, but there is no damage to the sheath…The sheath stitching is facing out and this is the way the sword sheath was constructed; the blade conforms to this shape and would not fit otherwise-an unusual feature… Belt has one weak spot where it was stored folded otherwise excellent throughout.

Of particular interest is the finely cast brilliant gilt belt plate that has Roman numerals stamped into the obverse and reverse. This style markings are commonly found on Confederate swords from the Kenansville Arsenal in North Carolina. I haven't seen a buckle marked this way and it may be indicative of this manufacturer.

This sword was handed down through a Virginia family and has never been offered publically. An outstanding Civil War officer's sword and belt set!
