Lt. H. L. Oakes, Jr. USNR 11th Amphibious Force D-Day Colt 1911 Pistol carried throughout WWII including his service as a commander with the 11th Amphibious Force at Normandy.
The photo shows his son wearing his Colt Model 1911 pistol and belt set and his Normandy M1 Helmet when Lt. Oakes was home on leave following the Normandy invasion. An extraordinary well documented D-Day firearm with provenance from the family that includes a copy of Lt. Oakes’ official authorization letter allowing him to retain this pistol.
Lt. Oakes served in North Africa, Italy, Normandy then took command of a ship in the Pacific as a Lt. Commander.
