Fine Original Ames 1856 Dated Model 1832 Artillery Short Sword Unit Stamped 33 N.J. (New Jersey)…Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts…made by Ames from 1832 until 1862… the blade has the “U S†stamp with the production date of “1856”… According to one source Ames only delivered 1,000 of these swords in 1856…The grip is made of cast brass and has a fish scale design with the droop wing eagle at the top of the pommel… Stamped on one side of the crossguard it the inspector initials of “JH†with “33” & “N.J.” superimposed and “33” stamped over “RHKW†on the other side of the guard… J H and RHKW were the inspectors’ initials of Joseph Hannis and Robert H.K. Whitney who inspected the swords for the United States Ordnance Department…The sword sheath is now missing as commonly encountered…Overall condition is excellent with very fine blade and deep crisp lettering and inspection stamps.(Ames 1856 Dated Model 1832 Artillery Short Sword Unit Stamped N.J.
